Yeosu Restores Local Cultural Heritages to Awaken Pride in National Defense History!
Jinnamgwan Hall, Left Jeolla Navy Command Restoration, Old Fortress Street Creation in Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces, Etc.
Yeosu draws attention with its plans to restore main local cultural heritages to enhance pride in national defense history and utilize them as tourism resources.
On the 18th, Yeosu announced on its projects, including restoration of Left Jeolla Navy Command, creation of old fortress street in Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces, maintenance of Jinnamgwan Hall, and creation of Seonso Theme Park.
These projects are attracting great interest from the citizens, as the historical sites hold significant historic and cultural values with heritage and pride of Yeosu.
Yeosu aims to work on these projects to awaken the national defense history and utilize them as the key foundation for historical and cultural tourism.
▶ Left Jeolla Navy Command Restoration Project Recovers 8 Structures, including Unjuheon Office Site.
The Left Jeolla Navy Command was founded in the 10th year of king Seongjong (1479) during the Joseon Dynasty and served as a strategic point of Joseon’s naval force for 417 years until the 32nd year of King Gojong (1895). It also served as the supreme command center, during Japanese invasions, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin commanded his fleet and wrote a war diary.
The restoration project plans to restore eight structures, including Unjuheon Office Site, and transform the surroundings to a park.
The project is scheduled to be completed by 2029. The framework plan was established in 2015, and Yeosu has acquired related sites and conducted four excavation surveys since 2017.
In 8th popular election, Yeosu invested 10 billion won to purchase 82 restoration sites and 53 structures. The demolition of the purchased structures was completed this year.
In particular, Yeosu ordered “Comprehensive Maintenance Plan” in November. When the maintenance is completed next year, Yeosu plans to restore the sites and structures through administrative procedures and design work.
▶Creation of 1.74km-Long Old Fortress Street in Left Jeolla Navy Command and Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces
The old fortress street in Left Jeolla Navy Command and Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces stretches 1.74 km from Dongsan-dong to Gwanmun-dong, Goso-dong, Jungang-dong, and Gunja-dong.
Yeosu plans to create a street by incorporating the national defense history and themes. The street creation will begin next year, after completing the working design this year.
As “Jinnamgwan Hall Maintenance Project” that began in 2015 is about to be completed and Jinnamgwan will be re-opened by the next February, Yeosu plans to promote a media façade project next year.
After finishing these projects, Yeosu plans to establish and settle Left Jeolla Navy Command Bank and Navy Launching Ceremony as regular programs to brand them as the traditional cultural arts performance of Yeosu.
Yeosu is considering on partial restoration of fortress and creation of east, west, and south gate of Left Jeolla Navy Command and Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces to hold a guard changing ceremony.
▶ Yeosu Creates Seonso Theme Park with Seonso Video Exhibition Hall, Dulle Trail, and Night Landscape
The Seonso Theme Park Creation Project plans to invest 23.9 billion won, including national and provincial funds, to develop Seonso Theme Video Exhibition Hall, trails, and Hanok restrooms in Seonso Historic Site in Sijeon-dong, Yeosu-si.
The Seonso Theme Video Exhibition Hall will be a two-story building with total floor area of 3,859㎡, featuring immersive theaters and knowledge experience halls applied with the latest technologies.
Yeosu also plans to create coastal walking trails, stretching to the entrance of Ungcheon Jangdo, as well as night landscape. The project will transform Seonso areas into an urban garden where citizens and tourists can learn history and for enjoy various experience programs.
Yeosu stated that, “These projects will help awaken the national defense spirit of Yeosu and increase pride of our citizens. We also plan to leverage them as tourism resources to further increase reputation of Yeosu as a historic and cultural city with long history.”
