Yeosu City Partners with ICLEI World Secretariat to Promote Island Expo and Secure COP33 Bid
Mutual Cooperation Agreement Signed for the Successful Hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and Securing the COP33 Bid
Yeosu City, led by Mayor Jung Gi-Myoung, announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) World Secretariat. This agreement, finalized on the 24th (local time) during a visit to Bonn, Germany, aims to ensure the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and secure the bid for the 33rd UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP33).
Yeosu City Vice Mayor Choi Jeong-Gi and ICLEI World Secretariat Secretary General Gino Van Begin signed the agreement, and ICLEI's Director of Global Advocacy, Yunus Arikan, was also in attendance. They engaged in in-depth discussions on critical topics, including expanding local governments' role in tackling the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality, promoting and supporting the Island Expo, and enhancing international cooperation to secure the COP33 bid.
Through this partnership, Yeosu City plans to leverage ICLEI's extensive network, which includes over 2,500 member cities across 125 countries, to promote the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo globally. Additionally, by hosting COP33, Yeosu aims to build international trust and support for its transition into a carbon-neutral city.
Vice Mayor Choi Jeong-Gi stated, "Building on the 2012 Yeosu World Expo legacy, which highlighted the importance of blue carbon stored in marine ecosystems, we are committed to successfully hosting the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and securing the COP33 bid. Through these initiatives, Yeosu City will demonstrate its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 on the global stage.“
This agreement enhances Yeosu City's international promotion strategy for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and its COP33 bid. Concurrently, Yeosu plans to strengthen its position as a global sustainable city by reinforcing cooperation with international organizations.
