A Venue for Global Cooperation to Respond to Climate Change… To Be Held in Yeosu, Republic of Korea
Yeosu City announced that the Republic of Korea (Yeosu) has been finally selected as the host for the ‘2026 UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Climate Week.’
UN Climate Week is a large-scale international event held annually ahead of the Conference of the Parties (COP). It gathers over 1,000 participants, including government officials from contracting parties and international organizations, to discuss response measures to the climate crisis, along with over 14,000 participants from companies and civil society. The event tours globally and is held regionally.
Since Yeosu City was finally selected in the domestic host city competition organized by the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment last September, it has actively carried out bid activities in cooperation with the government, Jeollanam-do, Yeosu City, international organizations, and civil society. In December last year, a Pan-Citizen Committee was also launched for citizen-participatory bid activities.
In particular, Yeosu City is a leading climate action city that has held ‘Climate Protection Week’ for the first time in the nation since 2008. It has been recognized for its outstanding capabilities in the climate and environment sectors, such as announcing the ‘Yeosu Declaration’ themed on marine ecosystem protection.
This event will be held in parallel with the Korea Green Transformation (K-GX) International Week organized by the Ministry of Climate. It is expected to present a cooperation model for international cooperation to respond to climate change and for achieving the Republic of Korea’s carbon neutrality goals.
Additionally, hosting the 2026 UN Climate Week is expected to serve as a significant opportunity to solidify the city's status as a global leader in the field of climate change response.
Meanwhile, Yeosu City plans to secure international conference hosting capabilities for the bid for COP33 in 2028 in conjunction with the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and further strengthen its climate leadership.
